Bundling Car and Motorcycle Insurance: How It Works and What You Save

Key Takeaways
  • Your car and your motorcycle each need their own policy, so bundling means buying both from the same insurer.
  • Jerry quote data shows riders save up to 4% on their motorcycle premium by bundling with a car policy.
  • You can compare motorcycle quotes and bundle your coverage right in the Jerry app, with discounts you qualify for applied automatically.

Bundling car and motorcycle insurance means buying both policies from the same insurance company, often earning you a multi-policy discount in return. It is one of the easiest discounts to qualify for, because you do not have to change how you ride, what you ride or where you park. You just have to buy both policies in the same place.

Jerry has helped 9,591 riders compare motorcycle quotes side by side in the last year, and find the discounts they qualify for. Here is how bundling works, what it saves and how to tell whether it is the right move for you.

How bundling car and motorcycle insurance works

Before you shop, it helps to know exactly how you are bundling, since motorcycle insurance requires its own policy.

Your car insurance policy typically does not cover your motorcycle. A bike is not a listed vehicle you can add to an auto policy the way you would add a second car. Motorcycles are underwritten differently and need a separate policy, and in nearly every state it is illegal to ride uncovered.

A small number of carriers will add limited motorcycle coverage to your auto policy as a policy endorsement rather than writing a separate policy, but it’s usually capped at your auto policy’s limits and leaves custom parts uncovered.

When you bundle, one insurer writes both your car and motorcycle coverage. Here’s how it works:

  • Your coverage stays separate. Each policy keeps its own coverages, limits and deductibles. A claim on the bike is paid by your motorcycle policy and doesn’t touch your car insurance policy’s coverage limits.
  • Your discounts stack. The multi-policy credit applies on top of other discounts you qualify for, like a license endorsement or a safety course.
  • Your billing gets simpler. You have one account to manage, which means one bill and one number to call for either policy.

Why it matters: Riders might assume bundling means the bike is covered by a car policy, but that is not the case unless you’ve specifically added a motorcycle endorsement.

How much you can save by bundling

Based on Jerry’s quote data, bundling a motorcycle with a car policy saves riders up to 4% on the motorcycle premium. Here is how that compares to the other discounts available to riders.

Should you bundle car and motorcycle insurance?

Bundling makes sense for a lot of riders, but not everyone. Here is how to know if it’s best for you.

Consider bundling if:

  • Your car premium is high. If your insurer applies the credit to the auto policy, a percentage off a high premium may be worth it. Riders with a newer financed car, a teen driver on the policy or full coverage on two cars may save the most.
  • You want one point of contact for claims. If a single incident damages both vehicles, one insurer handling both claims can simplify the process.
  • You have other policies to stack. The discount often grows with each policy you add to the account.

You may be better off with separate insurers if:

  • You ride a pricey bike. Sport bikes, heavily modified builds, vintage bikes and trikes get priced very differently from carrier to carrier, and specialty motorcycle carriers often underwrite them better than the big auto companies.
  • You have a lot of custom parts. Most policies include a small built-in limit for aftermarket parts, often around $3,000. If your upgrades are worth more than that, you need a carrier offering custom parts and equipment coverage at the limits you actually need.
  • You want rider-specific add-ons. Safety apparel coverage, motorcycle-appropriate roadside assistance and guest passenger liability are not offered by every company.

Jerry recommends: Most riders benefit from getting quotes for both bundled policies and a separate motorcycle policy from a different insurer to see what the best rates are. Jerry can do this all for you in the app, so you don’t have to go through the process yourself.
