Average Car Insurance Cost Per Month by Age and State

Where you live shapes your rate just as much as how old you are. Based on Jerry’s data, a 16-year-old in New York averages $1,348 per month while a 16-year-old in Iowa averages $239 per month. Same age, same clean record, but more than seven times the difference in cost. State minimum coverage requirements, population density, local claims costs and the number of uninsured drivers on the road all factor into what you pay at every age.

Use the sections below to see average monthly rates by age for your state.

Alabama

Alabama rates average $299 per month at age 16, below the national average for that age group. One notable pattern: rates spike 27% at age 17 before declining consistently, likely because newly independent young drivers moving off a parent’s policy push up that year’s average. By 65, the average drops to $116 per month. Drivers in Huntsville and Montgomery typically pay above the statewide average.

Key takeaway: Arkansas rates drop 27% between ages 16 and 17, which is atypical. After that, the decline follows the national pattern, reaching $132/mo by age 75.

California

California has some unique rules that affect how rates are set. The state bans the use of gender as a rating factor, meaning male and female drivers in the same age group are priced the same. That makes age an even more dominant driver of your premium here than in most states. 16-year-olds in California average $515 per month based on Jerry’s data, which is slightly below the national average for that age group.

Rates fall steadily through the 20s and 30s. By 30, the average drops to $257 per month, and by 65 it reaches $174 per month. California rates remain fairly consistent through the late 60s and into the 70s, with 75-year-olds averaging $196 per month, one of the more stable late-life trajectories in the dataset. Drivers in Los Angeles and San Francisco typically pay above the statewide average due to higher traffic density and theft risk.

Key takeaway: Connecticut 16-year-olds average $768/mo, among the highest nationally. The biggest drop, 23%, happens at age 21 (21%). Even at 75, the average stays elevated at $234/mo.

Delaware

Delaware rates spike sharply through the late teen years, with 18-year-olds averaging $711 per month before a steep 30% drop at 19. By 30, rates settle to $243 per month, and the long-term trend is downward from there.

Key takeaway: Delaware rates peak at 18 ($711/mo) before dropping sharply. By 30, the average falls to $243/mo. Rates continue declining steadily into the mid-60s.

Florida

Florida is one of the more expensive states for car insurance at every age, and the data shows an unusual pattern at the teen level. Rates actually increase from 16 to 17 and again from 17 to 18, peaking at $525 per month at age 18, which is the highest point in Florida’s dataset. This contrasts with the national trend, where rates generally fall after 16. The spike likely reflects the high cost of adding newly independent young drivers to standalone policies in a state with elevated claims costs.

Florida requires pip coverage for all drivers, which adds to the base premium regardless of age. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, all registered vehicles must carry both PIP and property damage liability coverage.

After 18, rates do fall consistently. By 30, the average drops to $280 per month, and by 65 it reaches $191 per month. Florida’s rates level off more slowly after 65 than most states, with 75-year-olds averaging $186 per month.

Key takeaway: Florida rates peak at 18 ($525/mo) before falling. PIP coverage is required statewide, which adds to premiums at every age. By 65, the average is $191/mo.

Georgia

Georgia has some of the highest teen rates in the country, and the data shows a pattern worth noting: rates peak at 18, not 16, so 18-year-olds in Georgia average $825 per month compared to $717 per month at 16. This spike at 18 follows the same logic seen nationally, where newly independent drivers moving off a parent’s policy push up the average for that age. The Atlanta metro area is a major cost driver, given its dense traffic, high accident frequency and elevated claims costs.

Rates fall sharply through the early 20s. By 21, the average drops to $537 per month. By 30, it reaches $330 per month. Georgia rates continue declining steadily through middle age but remain above the national average at most ages. By 65, drivers in Georgia average $255 per month, and 75-year-olds average $284 per month, both well above the national averages for those age groups. A strong driving record and car insurance discounts can make a meaningful difference here.

Idaho

Idaho is one of the most affordable states for car insurance in the country. There, 16-year-olds average $356 per month. By 30, that figure drops to just $113 per month, among the lowest 30-year-old averages in the dataset.

Key takeaway: Idaho is among the cheapest states at every age. Teens average $356/mo at 16, dropping to just $113/mo by 30. Low population density keeps rates well below national averages.

Illinois

Illinois rates tell two different stories depending on where you live. Drivers in the Chicago metro area pay significantly more than those in rural parts of the state, and that gap is consistent at every age. Statewide, 16-year-olds in Illinois average $348 per month, which is below the national teen average, making it more affordable than most states for young drivers at the state level.

Rates fall consistently through the 20s and 30s. The biggest year-over-year drops come at 21 and 22, where rates fall 16% and 15% respectively, steeper than the national average for those years. By 30, Illinois drivers average $187 per month. Rates continue declining into the 60s, reaching $135 per month at age 65. By 75, the average is $136 per month, one of the lower late-life rates in the Midwest. Drivers in Chicago should expect to pay above the statewide averages shown here.

Maryland

Maryland has some of the highest teen rates in the country. Key takeaway: New Mexico rates are near the national average. The steepest drop is at 21 (16%). By 65, the average falls to $96/mo, among the lower late-life rates in the dataset.

New York

New York has the highest car insurance rates by age of any state in Jerry’s dataset, and it isn’t close. The 16-year-olds in New York pay an average of $1,348 per month, more than three times the national average for that age. New York City’s extreme traffic density, mandatory no-fault PIP requirements and elevated liability costs drive premiums far above national norms. Even drivers with completely clean records pay well above what their peers pay in most other states.

Rates do fall with age, but they remain elevated throughout. By 25, the average is still $911 per month. By 30, it drops to $766 per month. The declines continue through the 50s and 60s, but New York never gets cheap. By 65, the average is $455 per month, and 75-year-olds average $447 per month, the highest rate for that age group in the entire dataset. Drivers in Albany and other upstate markets typically pay less than New York City, but the statewide average is heavily influenced by the metro area.

North Carolina

North Carolina operates a state-regulated insurance market where rates are influenced by the North Carolina Rate Bureau, which limits how much carriers can vary prices. North Carolinian 16-year-olds average $403 per month, below the national average, and the regulated market keeps rates more consistent across age groups than in open-competition states.

Vermont

Vermont has some of the lowest rates in the Northeast for most age groups, though significant year-to-year volatility in Jerry’s data likely reflects smaller sample sizes in this less-populated state. Teen rates average $492 per month at 16 but drop sharply to $331 per month at 17, the opposite of the national pattern. Rates fluctuate through the early 20s but trend steadily downward. By 65, the average reaches just $75 per month, one of the lowest late-life figures in the entire dataset.

Virginia

Virginia rates average $483 per month at 16, above the national average for that age, and decline steadily through the mid-60s. By 65, the average reaches $181 per month. One pattern worth noting: unlike most states, rates tick back upward after 65, reaching $215 per month by 75. Drivers in Richmond and Virginia Beach typically pay above the statewide average.
