Maine minimum car insurance requirements

Maine requires drivers to carry these minimum levels of auto insurance coverage:

  • $50,000 in bodily injury liability per person.
  • $100,000 in bodily injury liability per accident.
  • $25,000 in property damage liability per accident.
  • $50,000 in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage per person.
  • $100,000 in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage per accident.
  • $2,000 in medical payments coverage, or MedPay.

Drivers may purchase a combined single limit of $125,000 to satisfy Maine’s bodily injury and property damage liability requirements.

If you have a loan or lease on your vehicle, the lender will require full coverage. You may also need gap insurance, which can help you pay off your loan if your car is totaled.

When you’re getting car insurance quotes, you should think about if you simply want cheap car insurance or need additional, higher protection limits which will cost more (but provide more financial security). By getting several different quotes, you’ll be able to get an idea of what the average cost of car insurance will be for you.
