Car Insurance in Virginia

For over 60 years, Virginia motorists could pay a fee to avoid buying auto insurance. That changed in 2025 and now every driver in the state needs to have coverage.

Virginia car insurance coverage

Two major changes happened in Virginia recently. In 2025, Virginia raised its minimum required car insurance minimums to:

  • $50,000 for bodily injury or death of one person.
  • $100,000 for bodily injury or death of two people.
  • $25,000 for damage to other people’s property.

Furthermore, Virginia no longer allows drivers to pay a $500 annual “uninsured motor vehicle” fee to drive without insurance legally, ending a practice that existed since 1958.

When gathering car insurance quotes you’ll need to consider whether you want cheap car insurance or need increased coverage amounts to make the best decision for your finances and vehicle. By getting quotes from multiple places, you’ll be able to better figure out the average cost of car insurance for your profile and compare across various coverage types.
