Mercury car insurance review
Jerry did not give Mercury a star rating due to a lack of available data. Each year, Jerry revises its rating system and may rate this insurer in the future.
Mercury provides somewhat customizable insurance and offers discounts that may benefit drivers with good habits. The insurer received overall positive ratings from Jerry customers and is rated as financially strong by AM Best, however, Mercury has a higher-than-average complaint index and a low claims satisfaction rating from J.D. Power.
Mercury car insurance is available in 11 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia. Consumers can get a policy online, over the phone or via a local agent.
Who is Mercury best for?
Mercury may provide affordable coverage for consumers in the few states where the insurer operates. The company’s discounts and telematics program may be ideal for drivers with a clean record who maintain good driving habits.
Because insurers’ policy options and pricing can vary, it’s a good idea to get quotes from multiple companies to find your ideal coverage at the most affordable rate.
How much does Mercury car insurance cost?
The average cost for state minimum car insurance coverage with Mercury is much cheaper than the national average, according to aggregate data collected from over 400,000 policies quoted to real customers via Jerry in 2024 from 24 different insurance companies.
Your premium is determined by a number of factors, including your age, location, the type and age of vehicle you drive, your driving record, other drivers on your policy, the amount of coverage you require, and your deductible.
Mercury car insurance discounts
Mercury has a shorter list of discounts than some of its competitors and isn’t as specific about how to qualify for some of them. Here’s how the insurer says you could lower your premium:
- Have anti-theft features on your vehicle.
- Set up automatic bill payments.
- Electronically sign your documents.
- Go a period without an accident or citation; the company doesn’t specify how long.
- Insure a “good student” with a GPA of at least 3.0.
- Have multiple vehicles on your policy.
- Bundle your auto and a home, condo or renters insurance policy with Mercury.
- Pay your full premium up front.
Does Mercury offer insurance based on driving behavior?
Yes. The MercuryGO app gives drivers skill scores and real-time feedback while they drive. Policyholders get a discount for signing up. Here are the behaviors it monitors:
- Braking and acceleration.
- Speed.
- Corner speed.
- Phone handling while driving.
When it’s time to renew your policy, the app will consider your scores from the last 91 days to evaluate whether you’ll receive an additional discount.
This program is available in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia.

Coverage definitions
The insurer also offers the following optional coverages:
- Roadside assistance covers calls for help if your car becomes disabled while you’re away from home and you need a tire change, fuel delivery, locksmith or tow.
- Custom equipment coverage pays for damages to upgrades you make after purchasing the vehicle, such as a custom infotainment system.
- Rental car reimbursement provides a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired.
- Rideshare coverage covers those who work for ride-hailing and delivery services during the time between requests, when they’re waiting for an assignment. The company says this could cost as little as $0.90 per day.
- Gap insurance pays the difference between what you owe on a financed vehicle and its current value if it’s totaled.
Mercury’s selection of add-ons is helpful but not necessarily unique. Other major insurers offer most of these coverages.

Methodology
Statistics, rates and conclusions in this article are based on Jerry’s proprietary database of real-world car insurance quotes, not third-party models or estimates. As a licensed insurance broker in all 50 states, Jerry has firsthand visibility into how quotes are generated and validated, and all data is aggregated and anonymized to protect privacy. With millions of quotes delivered each year (often multiple offers per driver), our datasets are large enough to avoid bias toward any one region, insurer or driver type.
Unless otherwise indicated, quotes shown are from drivers with clean records in the last 12 months. Quotes involving accidents, violations or credit use the last 18 months to ensure a reliable sample.
How we rate car insurance companies
Jerry’s team of car insurance expert writers and editors analyzes real customer ratings, regulatory data and industry reports to evaluate each insurer across the factors that matter most when shopping for and using auto insurance: claims handling, customer satisfaction, complaint volume, coverage breadth, cost and discounts, financial stability and direct customer feedback from Jerry shoppers.
To calculate our 2026 Jerry Score rating, we analyzed over 1,200,000 actual policy quotes for real Jerry customers last year, across 100+ different insurers. This was used alongside data from independent industry sources covering financial strength, claims handling, customer satisfaction and customer complaints to create a proprietary score for our top insurance companies.
We regularly reassess insurers’ star ratings and fact-check these reviews to ensure they’re accurate and up-to-date. Each factor rolls up into a weighted composite score on a 1 to 5 scale.
