Car Insurance in Michigan

Auto insurance in Michigan
Auto insurance in Michigan has increased in cost despite the state government’s attempts to reduce it. Prior to 2020, drivers had to have unlimited personal injury protection (PIP) medical benefits. Today, Michiganders can select the level of PIP coverage they need, which the state government says will lower premiums. Despite this, drivers still saw a 33.2% increase in rates from January 2019 to September 2024, according to S&P Global’s data.
Michigan requires drivers to carry these minimum levels of coverage:
- $50,000 in bodily injury liability per person.
- $100,000 in bodily injury liability per accident.
- $10,000 in property damage liability for damage caused in another state.
Michigan drivers must also carry personal injury protection, or PIP, and property protection insurance, or PPI, which pays up to $1 million for property damage caused in Michigan during an at-fault accident.
Michigan no-fault insurance
Michigan is a no-fault state, which means drivers in the state must file injury claims with their own insurance company, regardless of who was found at fault. Michigan’s no-fault laws are designed to protect drivers from being sued after an accident, with some exceptions.
The state requires every driver to carry a certain amount of personal injury protection (PIP) — sometimes referred to as “no-fault insurance” — which covers medical expenses that are a result of a crash, lost wages due to injuries and in-home services for up to three years.
In Michigan, you must choose a specific amount of PIP coverage: $250,000 per person per accident, $500,000 per person per accident, or unlimited coverage. If you and family members living with you have qualifying health coverage, you can choose lower amounts. Michigan drivers must also purchase property protection insurance (PPI) which covers damage to other people’s property.
