Minimum vs. full coverage in Michigan

Minimum coverage is the cheapest option, and it will satisfy Michigan’s insurance requirements. But it won’t pay for damage to your own car if you cause a crash.

Full coverage includes Michigan’s insurance requirements, plus coverage to pay for damage to your own car. It typically includes:

  • Liability insurance, which covers injuries or property damage you cause to someone else in an accident.
  • Collision coverage, which pays for damage to your vehicle from an accident, regardless of who is responsible. Michigan drivers can choose between three types of collision coverage: limited, standard, and broad coverage.
  • Comprehensive coverage pays for vehicle damage caused by hitting an animal, falling objects, weather-related incidents and theft.

If you have a loan or lease on your vehicle, the lender will require full coverage. You may also need gap insurance, which can help you pay off your loan if your car is totaled.

Average car insurance costs for young drivers in Michigan

Younger drivers typically pay more for auto insurance since they have less experience on the road. Below are the average costs of car insurance in Michigan for drivers between 18 and 24.

Michigan no-fault insurance

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means your own auto insurance policy will cover expenses from an accident, no matter who was responsible.

Michigan drivers must have a type of car insurance called PIP, which covers medical expenses for you and your family members, as well as wage loss benefits, replacement services and damage you cause to others’ property.

You must choose between one of these PIP limits:

  • Unlimited coverage.
  • Up to $500,000 per person, per accident.
  • $250,000 per person, per accident, with no PIP medical benefits if you — and any relatives on your policy — have qualifying healthcare coverage.
  • $50,000 per person, per accident, if you’re enrolled in Medicaid. Any household members must either also be enrolled in Medicaid or have their own auto policy or qualifying health insurance.
  • No PIP medical coverage if you’re a qualifying Medicare member, and members of your household either have their own auto policy or health insurance.

All drivers must also carry up to $1 million in PPI, which pays for property damage you cause in an accident.

Why is car insurance so expensive in Michigan?

Car insurance is expensive in Michigan because of factors like:

  • The state’s unique and complex no-fault insurance system.
  • A high percentage of uninsured drivers on the road. According to a 2021 Insurance Research Council report, more than 25% of Michigan drivers don’t have car insurance.
  • Michigan has a high amount of deer collisions, which can cause vehicle damage and more insurance claims.
  • Dangerous winter driving conditions like snow, sleet and black ice.
