Factors that affect Subaru car insurance costs

Here are some of the factors that affect your Subaru insurance premium.

  • Personal factors: Your age, driving record, insurance history and level of coverage all influence your premiums.
  • Safety features: Subaru’s corporate philosophy involves focusing on safety, with an aim of reducing fatal accidents to zero by 2030 and pioneering driver assisting tools such as EyeSight — the first-ever driver aid that solely relies on stereo cameras. However, older Subarus may not have the safety features of newer Subarus as EyeSight only debuted in the 2013 model year Legacy and Outback cars.
  • Vehicle cost: A more complicated and expensive car typically costs more to repair or replace than a simpler, older car. Even the base model Subaru Impreza comes with all-wheel drive and a unique boxer engine, meaning it may cost more to insure than vehicles with simpler designs such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Accord.
  • Safety ratings: The IIHS listed four Subarus as winners on its 2024 Top Safety Pick list. Winners included the Ascent, Impreza, Solterra and Outback. A safer car generally means lower insurance rates.
  • Engine size: Bigger or turbocharged engines capable of greater horsepower are considered riskier to insure.

Subaru car insurance shopping tips

Here are several ways you can lower the cost of your Subaru car insurance.

  • Avoid buying higher trim tiers: More expensive configurations are likely to cost more to insure. For example, the high-performance Impreza WRX, luxury-tier Outback Touring and off-road Crosstrek Wilderness cost more than lower trim levels, according to Jerry’s Subaru data.
  • Rate shop: Despite Subarus winning awards for safety, it’s still a good idea to shop around to get the cheapest quote.
  • Available discounts: You may qualify for a bundling, homeowner or good student discount. Ask your insurer.
  • Telematics: Letting your insurer track your driving may result in lower premiums for safe drivers.
  • Increase deductibles: The deductible is the amount of money you pay before your insurer will pay on a claim. Raising it will lower your premium costs, but you must be able to pay the deductible on short notice.

Methodology

Data included in this analysis comes from policies that Jerry has quoted within the last 6 months for drivers with a clean record and that have full coverage, unless stated otherwise. Data related to violations, accidents or credit scores pull from quote data from the last 18 months. Jerry services 48 states and offers a range of insurance companies to choose from.

Over the past 12 months, 25% of drivers who switched with Jerry paid $85 or less per month. Not all customers find savings. Savings depend on state, policy features, coverage, driving history and other factors.
