  • Roadside Assistance is an optional coverage you can add to your Mercury auto insurance policy.
  • Mercury’s roadside assistance typically costs between $10 and $40 per year to add to your policy.
  • Mercury’s roadside assistance program can only be used on vehicles that are covered under your Mercury auto policy.
Without further ado, here’s what Mercury roadside assistance covers, what it costs, and how it stacks up to the competition.

What does Mercury roadside assistance cover?

With Mercury roadside assistance, you’ll get 24/7 coverage for the following roadside emergencies:
  • Vehicle towing: Mercury will cover the costs of having your vehicle towed to any qualified repair shop between 15 and 200 miles, depending on the policy limit you select.
  • Locksmith services: If your keys are stolen, lost, or accidentally locked inside your vehicle, Mercury will send a qualified locksmith to help you retrieve or replace your car keys—and you’ll only be responsible for paying the cost for replacement keys.
  • Battery jumpstarts: If your battery runs out of juice, Mercury will send a provider to come
    jump your car
    for you.
  • Flat tire changes: Tire troubles? With Mercury’s roadside assistance, you’ll get free
    tire changes
(but if you don’t have your own spare, you’ll need to pay for the replacement tire).
  • Emergency fuel and fluid delivery: Whether you run out of gas or need your coolant levels topped off, Mercury will deliver the fuel or fluid you need to get back on the road (you’ll pay for the cost of fuel or fluid itself, but won’t be charged for the delivery).
If you wind up in an emergency where you have to use a provider outside of Mercury’s Roadside Assistance network, then you’ll be responsible for paying the full cost of any services rendered—but you can submit the receipts to Mercury to potentially receive reimbursement.

How to use Mercury’s roadside assistance program

If you’ve signed up for Mercury’s roadside assistance program, taking advantage of emergency assistance is easy. All you have to do is call (866) 519-6478 to be connected with a service representative, who can send out the appropriate providers to you.
You’ll even get the option to opt-in for text updates that keep you posted on the status of your service request!

How much does Mercury roadside assistance cost?

Exactly how much you pay for Mercury’s roadside assistance program will depend on a couple of factors, including where you live and the type of vehicle(s) covered under your policy. In most cases, though, the cost is between $10 and $40 per year—making it a worthwhile investment for many.
Keep in mind that roadside assistance can help get you out of a pinch if your car breaks down unexpectedly, but it won’t cover the cost of any necessary repairs. For example, if your engine overheats and renders your car undrivable, Mercury’s roadside assistance can cover the costs of a tow—but you’ll be responsible for paying for engine repairs.

Mercury roadside assistance vs. AAA

Purchasing roadside assistance from Mercury will cost you less than a motor club membership—such as a subscription to
AAA
—but usually gets you less coverage.
A Basic AAA subscription includes all the same services as Mercury’s roadside assistance program, along with additional services such as winching, battery replacements, and even help finding local hotels when you’re stuck overnight. AAA also offers
two higher tiers of coverage
—Plus and Premier—with benefits like up to 100 miles of towing, free one-day rental cars, and free passport photos.
With a AAA membership, you’ll also be covered in any vehicle you happen to be a driver or passenger in—whereas Mercury will only offer coverage to vehicles covered under your insurance policy.
All of these extra perks may make an AAA membership look tempting—but ultimately, the choice comes down to cost and convenience. Using your car insurance company’s roadside assistance program will be significantly less expensive than investing in a motor club membership (which can range between $60 per year and $119 per year or more).
On top of a lower cost, you also won’t need to balance multiple memberships since Mercury’s roadside assistance will be included in your car insurance policy.
