2016 Toyota 4Runner engine oil capacity

The four-liter six-cylinder engine that powers your 2016 4Runner holds 6.6 quarts or about 6.2 liters of motor oil.
It’s important to note the difference between your
engine’s displacement
—the four-liter volume occupied by the pistons in your engine’s cylinders—and its oil capacity, which is the 6.6 quarts of oil that the motor stores to use as a lubricant.
Engine oil capacity and displacement are two different numbers and are never interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a Toyota 4Runner need?

Before you
change the oil and filter
in your SUV, you'll also need to know what kind of oil it takes. Yes, not all motor oils are the same, and you’ll need to find one that meets your vehicle’s specifications.
When you’re in the auto parts store, look for SAE 0W-20 oil. This is what Toyota recommends using in your 2016 4Runner, but whether you use synthetic or conventional oil is up to you.
But if that looks like some kind of cryptic code, don’t worry; each letter and number has a relatively simple meaning. For example, the SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. That’s the organization responsible for writing these codes.
The numbers represent the oil’s viscosity or thickness. The “0” stands for how thick the oil is at cold temperatures—that’s why it’s written in front of the “W,” which stands for winter—and the “20” represents how thick the oil is when it’s hot.
Smaller numbers signify thinner oils, which move through the engine more efficiently. The 0W-20 oil that your 4Runner takes is a fairly thin and free-moving oil. But if you can’t find 0W-20, Toyota does specify that you can occasionally use 5W-20.
If you still aren’t sure which oil to buy, consider these three options:

How often to change the oil on a 2016 Toyota 4Runner

Toyota recommends changing the oil in your 2016 4Runner every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. If you don’t drive very often, it might be easier to remember to change the oil every six months.
Between oil changes, it’s important to check the oil periodically to ensure it still looks good. It’s wise to inspect your oil at least once a month or every other time you fill the gas tank.
When you check your oil, look for these signs that it needs to be changed:
  • Muddy, dark brown, or black oil (clean oil looks like dark honey with an amber tint)
  • Oil with a sandy, gritty, or grimy texture
  • Unpleasant smells from the engine, like burning, oil, or smoke
  • Decreased engine performance
  • Unusual noises coming from the engine

How to change your oil and oil filter

After you purchase the correct oil and filter, you’re ready to begin changing the oil. These are the necessary tools:
  • A jack and jack stands or ramps to lift the car
  • A Ratchet and a 14-millimeter socket
  • An oil filter wrench
  • A torque wrench
  • A funnel
  • A drain pan
  • A clean towel or rag
Before you drain the oil, turn your car on and let it run for five minutes. This allows the oil to heat up, which helps it drain quickly. Once the engine is warm, turn off your vehicle, open the hood, and follow the steps below.
Step 1: Pull the dipstick and remove the oil fill cap.
Step 2: Go beneath the car and remove the oil drain plug. Use the drain pan to catch the dirty oil.
Step 3: While you wait for the oil to drain, unscrew and remove the old oil filter.
Step 4: Use your finger to lightly coat the new filter’s gasket with oil before screwing it into place. Be sure to tighten the new filter only until it is snug.
Step 5: Replace the oil drain plug and tighten it to 30 lb-ft
Step 6: Use your funnel to fill the engine with clean oil and then replace the oil fill cap.
After completing these steps, turn the engine on and let it run for 30 seconds. Then, check the oil level using the dipstick and top it off if necessary, checking to make sure that the
oil pressure light
on your car's dashboard turns off .
Finally, don’t forget to recycle your old oil by pouring it into the new oil container and returning it to the auto parts store.
