The 2023 Mini Cooper is a retro-modern compact car designed with spunk and pep in mind. While not a practical family vehicle, it’s fun for singles or as a second pleasure vehicle. The S trim level is available in a two-door hatchback, four-door hatchback, or two-door convertible, giving you plenty of great options to choose from.
But exactly what does the S trim level include? And what are the optional upgrades? Learn about customizing your

2023 Mini Cooper S customization options

The Mini Cooper S is a higher trim level of the standard Mini Cooper and is available on all of the model’s layouts—including a two-door
hatchback
hardtop, a four-door hatchback hardtop, and a two-door convertible. All vehicles are small and lightweight, meaning they zip around easily on the highway.
The hardtop model starts at $27,750, while the convertible starts at $32,750. This is only slightly more expensive than the standard model, making this trim level a reasonable and affordable upgrade.
But what, exactly, makes the Mini Cooper S different? The answer is in the engine! The standard engine is a turbocharged 134-hp 1.5-liter three cylinder, which lacks a bit of power and performance. Upgrade to one of the S models for a more powerful turbocharged 189-hp 2.0-liter four cylinder, which will make your Coop feel like you’re zipping on a race track.
All Mini Cooper S models are available in automatic or manual transmission, and give drivers an average of 27 to 30 mpg on the highway, which is slightly lower than the fuel efficiency offered by the standard engine.
None of the Mini Cooper S’s trunks are large, but hardtop models offer slightly more cargo space. Folding down the rear seats allows enough room to store a few pieces of carry-on luggage. Convertible trunks are quite tiny—don’t even expect to be able to load in a significant amount of groceries.
All models come standard with front heated seats, and an upgraded leather interior is optional. You’ll also get to choose from a variety of bright, fun paint colors—you can even customize the color of your roof, mirrors, trim, and more.

Mini Cooper optional packages

In addition to choosing between a 2-door or 4-door hardtop hatchback or a 2-door convertible, you’ll also have the option of adding the visual Resolute package to your 2023 Mini Cooper S.
This
upgraded package
is brand new in 2023 and completely aesthetic—it comes with a Rebel Green body with Pepper White mirror caps and roof. (The convertible, of course, will come with a black cloth top). You’ll also get upgraded 18-inch black wheels, hood stripes, pin-striped door-sill protectors, and yellow-and-cream tweed upholstery.
You can also select some individual upgrades, such as the Iconic Trim for a wider selection of paint colors, a choice of 16- or 17-inch wheels, and a variety of custom rims.

How to customize your Mini Cooper S to save money

Generally, opting for higher trim levels and additional optional packages will raise the price of your Mini Cooper. For example, the 2023 Hardtop starts at just $24,250, but upgrading to the S model’s more powerful engine will cost you an additional $3,500.
Unfortunately, your car insurance rates will likely increase as well, as vehicles with more advanced, custom features are usually more expensive to repair.
Fortunately, there are a few upgrades you can make that will save you big bucks in the long run. Here are some impactful changes you can make to your Mini Cooper S:
  • Tires—You’ll get to choose between 16- and 17-inch rims, unless you upgrade to the Resolute’s 18-inch wheels. But the tire you choose will have a bigger effect on long-term cost. Certain types of tires increase fuel economy, so make sure to do your research and choose the best tire for your unique needs.
  • Aerodynamic adjustments—-Another way to increase fuel economy is to make some aerodynamic adjustments to your vehicle. In general, hardtop vehicles will always be more aerodynamic than their convertible counterparts, so consider this if you’re concerned about saving on gas.
  • Make your own repairs and customizations—Performing DIY repairs and mods is an obvious way to save some dough. Look for step-by-step directions online, especially if you’re handy, and avoid taking your Coop to the mechanic.

The best Mini Cooper S mods

The Mini Cooper S and its optional upgrades are relatively straightforward. If you want a truly customized Coop, you may have to opt for some aftermarket mods. Here are some that we think will make a big impact:

Tires

The type of tire you need will be dependent on several factors, including your driving habits, your local climate, and the current season. For example, using
winter tires
is a great idea if you live somewhere with lots of snow and ice.

Mirror plates/covers

Add a pop of color or funky print to your car’s left and right rear-view mirrors! This is a fast and easy way to change up your car’s aesthetics.

Cold air intake

Installing cold air intake has a variety of benefits, including increased acceleration, increased mileage, and a generally nicer sound. If you’ve invested in a Mini Cooper S and performance is a concern, installing cold air intake will only up the ante that much more.
