Performance and fuel economy

In contrast to many other hybrids, the Q5 PHEV doesn't lose out on performance—it actually beats the gas-powered

SQ5

for acceleration! The 55 TFSI e powertrain delivers 362-hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, able to reach 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The only place it falls short is towing: the maximum capacity is 2,000 lbs, as opposed to 4,400 lbs for the gas-powered 45 TFSI quattro.

All that power means a slightly less efficient vehicle—the Q5 PHEV has an all-electric range of 23 miles, about 19 miles short of the class leader (more on that later). When you run out of gas, the 55 TFSI e returns to an unremarkable 26 combined mpg, just one mpg more than the 45 TFSI gas engine. You'll have to run on gas only until you get home for a three-hour charging session, which can get expensive because the Q5 only takes premium fuel.

Trims and prices

The Q5 PHEV is available in as many trims as its gasoline counterparts. The

($59,795) comes with 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit with customizable digital gauges. Technology upgrades include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, traffic jam assistance, and a 360° top-down camera system.

With the

Prestige S Line TFSI e

($65,145), you get LED headlights and noise-reduction front windows outside, plus an ambient lighting system, heated rear seats, and Bang & Olufsen premium sound system inside. Besides the automated parking assistant and traffic sign recognition software, the windshield heads-up display is perhaps the coolest feature. It projects important information directly onto the windshield in the driver’s line of sight.

Design

The term “S Line” refers to Audi’s now-standard appearance package, which adds a contrasting rugged grille and air vents to the Q5’s streamlined body. Inside, the seats are sportier, the accents brighter and sharper, and the trims and pedals cast in metal. There are seven exterior paint colors available, plus the Black Optic package ($500) which darkens the roof rails and exterior trim.

The battery pack reduces storage, but the Q5's power liftgate and 40/20/40 folding seatbacks help make up for it. There’s enough room for 25.9 cubic feet of luggage with four passengers. Travel alone or in a pair, and you can reach a maximum of 54.1 cubic feet of storage space.
