How do I put a MINI Cooper in neutral?

My MINI Cooper won’t turn on. The engine cranks a little bit, but I need to get another look at it. Unfortunately, I can’t reach the engine compartment because the car is in the garage. Is there a way to put a MINI Cooper in neutral?

Here’s how to put a MINI Cooper in neutral:
  1. Get into the driver’s seat and put your foot on the brake.
  2. Surrounding the gear shift is a circular gear selector plate that tells you what gear you’re in. Pry that plate off with a flathead screwdriver.
  3. You should see a yellow tab or lever to the right of the gear shift. Use a flathead screwdriver to push it.
  4. With this tab pressed, use your other hand to shift the car to neutral.
