Is it illegal to sleep in your car in Texas?

I’m from Houston, Texas, and I just graduated from college. Before I find my first big boy job, I want to go all over Texas during the summer. To save money, I was thinking about sleeping in my car. Is this legal in Texas?

Exploring Texas is an epic way to spend your last summer as a youth! And more good news: it is not illegal for you to sleep in your car in
Texas
.
The only law that you need to respect is that you cannot park in a rest area for more than 24 hours. Just remember to not leave your vehicle running while you sleep to avoid waking up to dead battery!
Since you plan on seeing all of Texas, you’re unlikely to break the law. But just in case a police officer tells you to leave, you know they’re not hassling you for no reason.
If you want a few ideas for your road trip, here are some hot spots:
  • Hike the Santa Elena Canyon at Big Bend National Park.
  • See the brand new Globe Life Park and watch a Rangers game in Arlington.
  • Take the Wyler Aerial Tramway for spectacular views of El Paso.
  • Explore the delightfully strange and hipster-esque Deep Ellum neighborhood in Dallas.
  • Take photos at the Cathedral of Junk in Austin.
Before you set off on your epic road trip, remember to pack an emergency kit and add either
roadside assistance
or
towing and labor coverage
to your
car insurance
policy.
