Should I add a driver with a DUI to my policy?

What happens if I add a driver to my policy with a recent DUI? My grandma, GamGam, got arrested for a DUI, and her car insurance company canceled her policy. Now she can't find an affordable plan, so she wants me to add her to my policy.

Adding anyone to your
car insurance
policy can have serious financial consequences—especially for a driver with a recent DUI. You also need to live at the same address to add someone to your insurance, so unless your GamGam lives with you, your insurer won’t allow it.
But let’s look at what could happen if you add a driver with a DUI to your policy. If GamGam’s insurance was canceled because of the DUI, you might lose coverage if you add her. Try to get a full copy of her
driving history
to know more about what you are getting into first. GamGam can request a copy from the DMV.
Beyond losing your insurance, here are other reasons you don’t want to jump into adding her:
  • Higher costs: putting her on your policy would increase your insurance premium since she is a high-risk driver.
  • On the record: her activity would be added to your policy record, so you would be impacted if she is written up for any traffic violation. And if she files a claim under your policy, your insurance limit could be reached, leaving you out of luck if you need to file a claim yourself.
  • Potential lawsuits: if she gets into an accident that causes damage over your liability limits, you can both be named in the resulting lawsuit.
It’s better to help her find her own policy instead of adding her to yours. Have her get some quotes from
The General
or another insurer that works with high-risk drivers.
