What is the white powder on my car battery terminal?

I was doing regular car maintenance yesterday and noticed a white powdery substance on my car battery terminal. What is the white powder power on my car battery terminal?

The white powder on your car battery terminal is either lead sulfate or anhydrous copper sulfate. If your car battery terminal has a white powder, your copper connectors are corroding. Luckily you can clean battery corrosion by following these steps:
  • Remove battery cables
  • Spray battery cleaning agent on the battery terminal
  • Dry and polish battery terminal posts
  • Reconnect battery cables
  • Apply a battery corrosion preventative
