Why can't people in the military add gap insurance at the dealership?

I live in Kansas and when I purchased my vehicle, I was told that I couldn't add gap insurance because I was in the military. Is this true? Is there any way I can add it on now?

“There is a law called the Military Lending Act. Up until recently, there had been amendments passed to prevent military servicemembers and their dependents from obtaining certain credit services.
This included
gap insurance
. However, parts of these amendments have been repealed to allow anyone in the military to obtain gap insurance.
If your dealership is saying they can’t provide it to you, it may be because they are unaware of the changes in the law. You can bring this to their attention and they may allow you to add gap insurance.
Another option is to look at your current
car insurance
carrier. Many carriers offer some form of gap coverage with their policies.
If your carrier doesn’t offer it, you can look into other companies and comparison shop. Requesting
car insurance quotes online
is an easy way to find affordable rates for the coverage you need.”
